The Shira route is one of the popular climbing routes leading to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Located in Tanzania, this route offers a unique and challenging trekking experience for adventurers seeking to conquer the majestic mountain. With its stunning landscapes and diverse ecosystems, the Shira Route is a favourite choice for many climbers.

The Shira Route begins on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro and approaches the mountain from the Shira Plateau, which is situated at an elevation of around 3,800 meters (12,500 feet).

Conditions And Distance

The total length of the Shira route is 56 km/35 miles. Starting at Morum Barrier, this route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west. Compared to the Lemosho route, the Shira Route starts at a kilometre-high elevation.

Hikers on the Shira route can witness some of the best sunrises and sunsets on Kilimanjaro.

Duration

Climbers can complete this route in 6 or 7 days. But we suggest 7- a day climb over the 6- day. The 7-day climb gives you more time to acclimatize, which is crucial in Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing.

How Hard Is The Shira route?

Because of staring at a higher altitude, the Shira Route is comparatively hard than other routes. But this route is achievable. With the right planning and preparation, you can complete this route.

Shira route is hard at the beginning, but on Day-3 it offers a climb high sleep low which helps you to acclimatise properly.

Day-By-Day Breakdown

The day-by-day itinerary of the Shira Route follows like this

  • On Day 1 -  The climbing starts from the Morum Barrier and goes through heath and moorland and ends at Simba camp.
  • On Day 2 – From Shira Camp 1 to Shira 2 camp, by passing through Shira Cathedral
  • On Day 3 – Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
  • On Day 4  - Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp,
  • On Day 5 – Karanga to Barafu Camp
  • On Day 6 – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
  • On Day 7 – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
